NERT and First Aid Gear
One of the first rules of Disaster, Emergency or Medical response is: "First, take care of yourself. You can't help others if you are injured, sick, or killed". Here are some items you need that are easy to find when sold in huge quantities, but are difficult to find reasonably priced in quantities you might actually use!
I buy the huge quantities needed to get the discounts, break them down into amounts you can use, and pass the savings on to you!
Safety tips for volunteers are at the bottom of this page - don't miss them!
EMS (Emergency Medical Service) Shears: These
shears are THE rescue tool to have! They will cut right
through any fabric, so you can cut Jeans to get to an injury, or
through sheets to make emergency dressings, on the spot.
They will even cut through sheet metal, something I have done with
them. The 5 1/2" size will fit the most
delicate hand.. Handles are random color.

Cold Packs, Kit sized, in boxes: Sometimes,
some cold is just the right therapy for strains, sprains, twists,
and even those days that might bring on Hyperthermia. I have
certainly used them with my Kids! Squeeze, to make a chemical
reaction that makes an instant cold. Non Toxic. To say that
this is a cool item to have - is an understatement! (and a very bad joke)!

Antiseptic Wipes, Benzalkoninum Chloride:
These wipes look similar to the the ones that are given out
at rib and chicken places. These are, however, soaked in a
powerful germ killer. These can be used for cleaning your
hands after an incident, or for cleaning and disinfecting wounds
on the spot - or both! When an injury happens off the beaten path - as
happened to me in 2006 - you do NOT want to be short on them! (I
wasn't). As low as 8 cents each, they are worth their weight in gold when
needed! You need to have 100 too many - than 1 too few. Although they do not have an
expiration date, consider replacing them after 5 years, as some
will dry out after that time.
Incoming!
Triple antibiotic gel - in little packets.
Burn cream, in little packets.
Millions of 'em!
Firefighter TIP: Never, EVER handle fire hose with your bare hands! Fire hose picks up glass shards and debris from gutters and other very unclean places. Your greatest mission in life may be passing a fire hose from one hand to another, but don't make your contribution with bare hands. Get some gloves! You need heavy duty gloves - preferably several pair. Because gloves are very personal items, you should make your way to a retail outlet, and select gloves that are right for you. One pair may not be right at all, while the next pair - from the same Manufacturer and of the same size - will be perfect. (From a Federal Firefighter, stationed at Hunter's Point).
Bill Tip: Your First Aid Kit - and other medical equipment - needs a thorough going over annually. I do mine in the Spring, just before the camping season. Before I venture out to the back woods with my Children, I want to be sure that I have fresh equipment that matches - and even exceeds - my skills. Some of my equipment may be used by people who have better skills than I - to help my Children in case of emergency. Update 2006: Nowadays, the Children may use their skills to help ME! My, how times have changed!
Bill Tip: Boots. You want boots for disaster - or any emergency - response - so protect those feet! I once had the honor of acting as a Chief's assistant - at a fire. One thing I learned - you do not want those boots with stitching above the toes! You want round toed boots. Otherwise, water will collect in that little "cup" above your foot, and eventually water will find it's way to soak your socks. I learned this very early, on an "all day" assignment. "Squish, Squish". Need I say more?
